"I have always thought money should never impede one from fulfilling their ambitions or dreams. Studying at the University of Cambridge had been my dream ever since I was young. Being a student in one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world is a truly fascinating experience, but is also very expensive. Being unable to fund those studies on my own, I had to take out various loans from Belgian charities and from my family.

During my studies at Cambridge, I was extremely fortunate to receive a generous contribution from the Royal Belgian Benevolent Society (RBBS). While this generous contribution is only a fraction of the total amount that cost my program at Cambridge, it has nevertheless helped me greatly in alleviating the debt-burden that I had to incur. As I’m now starting off my professional life with a lighter weight on my shoulders, I thank RBBS for making it possible to fulfil one of my lifelong ambitions."

"At the time (2006), the scholarship of the Royal Belgian Benevolent Society closed the last hole in the financing of my Master's studies in the United Kingdom. That year has been a real eye-opener for me and even a turning point in my life, since I then undertook a PhD , got involved in politics, and eventually became a Member of the European Parliament. As a Belgian, I am proud of what the Society has achieved over the past decades and of the contributions it has made to so many people's lives. I sincerely hope the scholarship can potentially be the kickstarter to the turning point in your life also."
